Abrasives Market Size in Colombia

In 2021, the Colombian abrasives market increased by 12% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, exports of abrasives (natural) from Colombia contracted dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 277%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 146%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Honduras (X tons) was the main destination for abrasives exports from Colombia, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, abrasives exports to Honduras exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Aruba (X kg), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Honduras was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Aruba (0.0% per year) and Peru (-21.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for abrasives exported from Colombia were Aruba ($X), Honduras ($X) and Peru ($X), together comprising 98% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Honduras, with a CAGR of 0.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, the average abrasives export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 260%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Aruba ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+27.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Colombia

In 2021, purchases abroad of abrasives (natural) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives imports fell to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Ecuador (X tons) constituted the largest abrasives supplier to Colombia, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, abrasives imports from Ecuador exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), eightfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ecuador totaled +19.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-20.3% per year) and Germany (+40.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Ecuador ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest abrasives suppliers to Colombia, with a combined 72% share of total imports. India, Poland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +121.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average abrasives import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -28.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 107% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+50.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
