The Colombian market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -5.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, production of hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, when their volume decreased by -2.3% to X units. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 513%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 364% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ecuador (X units) was the main destination for exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Colombia, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Ecuador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Trinidad and Tobago (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Panama (X units), with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ecuador stood at +44.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (+154.1% per year) and Panama (+40.4% per year).

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) remains the key foreign market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exports from Colombia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Trinidad and Tobago ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Panama, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ecuador amounted to +36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (+139.2% per year) and Panama (+37.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -10.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Trinidad and Tobago ($X per unit) and Barbados ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Jamaica ($X per unit) and Ecuador ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Jamaica (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Colombia

After five years of decline, supplies from abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers increased by 40% to X units in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 126%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mexico (X units) constituted the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container supplier to Colombia, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Chile (X units), with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Mexico totaled +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+123.8% per year) and Chile (-6.4% per year).

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Colombia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Mexico stood at +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+112.7% per year) and Brazil (-14.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 13%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for Chile ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
