Bottled Water Market Size in Colombia

The Colombian bottled water market shrank to $X in 2022, falling by -3.1% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 249%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile (X tons) was the main destination for bottled water exports from Colombia, accounting for a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, bottled water exports to Chile exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Peru (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Chile amounted to +30.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+23.9% per year) and Germany (+27.0% per year).

In value terms, Chile ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for bottled waters exports from Colombia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Chile totaled +246.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+21.6% per year) and Guatemala (+119.0% per year).

The average bottled water export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bottled water export price increased by +2.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+17.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Colombia

Bottled water imports into Colombia shrank remarkably to X tons in 2022, reducing by -21.9% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 298%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, bottled water imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 209%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of bottled water to Colombia, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, bottled water imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Norway (X tons), with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States totaled +23.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+11.7% per year) and Norway (+127.4% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X), the United States ($X) and Norway ($X) appeared to be the largest bottled water suppliers to Colombia, with a combined 44% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Norway, with a CAGR of +103.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average bottled water import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 59% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
