In 2021, the Colombian direct dye market increased by 49% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 160% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, direct dye exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 210%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ecuador (X tons) was the main destination for direct dye exports from Colombia, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, direct dye exports to Ecuador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Trinidad and Tobago (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ecuador amounted to +23.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (+14.8% per year) and the United States (+55.1% per year).

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) remains the key foreign market for direct dyes and preparations based thereon exports from Colombia, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Trinidad and Tobago ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Panama, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ecuador amounted to +22.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (+10.9% per year) and Panama (+35.1% per year).

In general, export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. Based on 2021 figures, direct dye export price decreased by -25.9% against 2017 indices. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +101.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Brazil (X tons), India (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of direct dye imports to Colombia, together accounting for 79% of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Spain and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +63.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
