In 2021, purchases abroad of electro-diagnostic apparatus, and ultra-violet or infra-red ray apparatus increased by 17% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, diagnostic equipment imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. In 2021, China (X units) was the main diagnostic equipment supplier to Colombia, accounting for a 855% share of total imports. Moreover, diagnostic equipment imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Dominican Republic (X units), with a 124% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+0.3% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+60.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest diagnostic equipment suppliers to Colombia, together comprising 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Dominican Republic and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 3.8%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +31.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
