Expanded Clays Market Size in Colombia

The Colombian expanded clays market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, increasing by 30% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Expanded clays consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag, when their volume increased by 108% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, expanded clays exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Venezuela (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and Ecuador (X kg) were the main destinations of expanded clays exports from Colombia, with a combined 88% share of total exports. Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +45.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average expanded clays export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 100% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 151%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, approx. X tons of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag were imported into Colombia; picking up by 12% against 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, expanded clays imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 101%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Mexico (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of expanded clays to Colombia, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, expanded clays imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tons), sevenfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico stood at -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+14.9% per year) and China (-4.8% per year).

Argentina, with a CAGR of +14.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average expanded clays import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 32% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, expanded clays import price increased by +53.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 37%.
