In 2022, the Colombian fish fat and oil market decreased by -4.2% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -6.8% against 2020 indices. In value terms, fish fat and oil exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp reduction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main destinations of fish fat and oil exports from Colombia, with a combined 72% share of total exports. Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada and Ecuador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +96.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Venezuela ($X) remains the key foreign market for fish fats and oils exports from Colombia, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 16% share.

Imports into Colombia

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of fish fats and oils decreased by -33.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, fish fat and oil imports reduced to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Ecuador (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main suppliers of fish fat and oil imports to Colombia, together accounting for 67% of total imports. Morocco, France and Iceland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
