The Colombian lemon and lime market contracted to $X in 2022, reducing by -12.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong increase. Lemon and lime consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Lemon And Lime Production in Colombia

In value terms, lemon and lime production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 121% against the previous year. Lemon and lime production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of lemons and limes in Colombia expanded slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 2.2% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the yield increased by 6.3%. Over the period under review, the average lemon and lime yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of lemons and limes were harvested in Colombia; which is down by -19.3% against the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, saw buoyant growth. After eight years of growth, shipments abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -8.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 127%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 329% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for lemon and lime exports from Colombia, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, lemon and lime exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at +44.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+46.0% per year) and Germany (+217.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for lemons and limes exports from Colombia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +48.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+230.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+48.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average lemon and lime export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -10.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lemon and lime export price increased by +16.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 89% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+10.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Colombia

In 2022, lemon and lime imports into Colombia declined remarkably to X tons, falling by -27.5% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 395% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 179% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ecuador (X tons) was the main supplier of lemon and lime to Colombia, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, lemon and lime imports from Ecuador exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ecuador was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+50.2% per year) and the United States (-2.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest lemon and lime suppliers to Colombia were Ecuador ($X), Chile ($X) and the United States ($X).

In terms of the main suppliers, Chile, with a CAGR of +26.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average lemon and lime import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 71%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
