The Colombian papaya market reached $X in 2022, increasing by 7.9% against the previous year. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, papaya exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 308% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Curacao (X tons) was the main destination for papaya exports from Colombia, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, papaya exports to Curacao exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ecuador (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Curacao totaled +51.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+84.9% per year) and Ecuador (+4.4% per year).

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) remains the key foreign market for papayas exports from Colombia, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Curacao ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ecuador amounted to +28.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Curacao (+33.7% per year) and the UK (+53.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average papaya export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 101% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Curacao ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+23.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of papayas decreased by -47.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 1,301%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, papaya imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 929% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Costa Rica (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) were the main suppliers of papaya imports to Colombia.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Costa Rica (with a CAGR of +20.6%).
