In value terms, paddy rice exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 2,459%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ecuador (X tons) was the main destination for paddy rice exports from Colombia, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, paddy rice exports to Ecuador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Aruba (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Costa Rica (X tons), with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ecuador totaled +52.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Aruba (+51.4% per year) and Costa Rica (-16.8% per year).

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X) remains the key foreign market for paddy rice exports from Colombia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 29% share of total exports. It was followed by Aruba, with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Costa Rica amounted to +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ecuador (+31.1% per year) and Aruba (+39.7% per year).

In 2022, the average paddy rice export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 214%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Costa Rica ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Aruba ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Paddy rice imports into Colombia rose markedly to X tons in 2022, picking up by 6.3% on 2021. Overall, imports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 477% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paddy rice imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 232% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
