Tin Market Size in Colombia

In 2022, the Colombian tin market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a deep setback. Tin consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

After seven years of growth, overseas shipments of tin decreased by -41.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 466% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, tin exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 473%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Spain (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) were the main destinations of tin exports from Colombia.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Venezuela (with a CAGR of +72.4%).

In value terms, the largest markets for tin exported from Colombia were Venezuela ($X) and Spain ($X).

Venezuela, with a CAGR of +74.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review.

The average tin export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 61% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+1.5%).

In 2022, supplies from abroad of tin increased by 15% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tin imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Peru (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons) were the main suppliers of tin imports to Colombia, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of -1.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest tin suppliers to Colombia were Peru ($X), Brazil ($X) and Bolivia ($X), with a combined 99% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Peru, with a CAGR of -1.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average tin import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
