Whey Market Size in Colombia

In 2022, the Colombian whey market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Venezuela totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bolivia (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of whey were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -22.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, whey imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 40%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of whey to Colombia, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, whey imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tons), threefold. Chile (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at +23.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-0.3% per year) and Chile (-11.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whey to Colombia, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled +19.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-4.0% per year) and Chile (-13.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average whey import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) and Argentina ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
