In 2021, shipments abroad of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -13.6% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 352%. The exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 244%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Egypt (X cubic meters) was the main destination for exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Colombia, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Egypt exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Jordan (X cubic meters), threefold. Lebanon (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Egypt amounted to +274.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (+43.9% per year) and Lebanon (+3.7% per year).
In value terms, Egypt ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates exports from Colombia, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Egypt amounted to +296.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (+31.2% per year) and Lebanon (-5.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 154% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+16.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Colombia
In 2021, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates into Colombia expanded modestly to X cubic meters, surging by 3.2% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +24.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 90%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United States (X cubic meters), Germany (X cubic meters) and Ecuador (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Colombia, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Mexico and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +84.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates suppliers to Colombia were the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Ecuador ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. China and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
Mexico, with a CAGR of +61.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 6.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Mexico ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
