The Costa Rican broom, brush, and mop market fell modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.8% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, saw mild growth. Broom, brush, and mop consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of brooms, brushes, and mops increased by 11% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -34.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 33%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Nicaragua (X units), Honduras (X units) and Panama (X units) were the main destinations of broom, brush, and mop exports from Costa Rica, together accounting for 67% of total exports. The UK, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, the Netherlands, Chile, Thailand, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, the United States and El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +172.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for broom, brush, and mop exported from Costa Rica were Nicaragua ($X), Honduras ($X) and Panama ($X), with a combined 69% share of total exports. The UK, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Guatemala, Thailand, the United States and El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Chile, with a CAGR of +116.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average broom, brush, and mop export price amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to El Salvador (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, broom, brush, and mop imports into Costa Rica dropped slightly to X units, reducing by -3.7% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 28%. Imports peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop imports fell modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X units), Mexico (X units) and Guatemala (X units) were the main suppliers of broom, brush, and mop imports to Costa Rica, with a combined 71% share of total imports. The United States, Brazil, Vietnam, Spain, El Salvador, Colombia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of brooms, brushes, and mops to Costa Rica, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (-1.5% per year) and the United States (-0.8% per year).

In 2022, the average broom, brush, and mop import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 5.9%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
