The Costa Rican casein and caseinates market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a mild setback. In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of casein and caseinates, when their volume decreased by -21.7% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,248% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, casein and caseinates exports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 644%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Panama (X tons) was the main destination for casein and caseinates exports from Costa Rica, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, casein and caseinates exports to Panama exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Nicaragua (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Panama totaled +95.0%.

In value terms, Panama ($X) and Nicaragua ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for casein and caseinates exported from Costa Rica worldwide.

Panama, with a CAGR of +73.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average casein and caseinates export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 32% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guatemala (+153.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Casein And Caseinates Imports

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, purchases abroad of casein and caseinates decreased by -0.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 217%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, casein and caseinates imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 224% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of casein and caseinates imports to Costa Rica, with a combined 38% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +51.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest casein and caseinates suppliers to Costa Rica, together comprising 30% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +12.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average casein and caseinates import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
