For the third year in a row, the Costa Rican cereal market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. The average yield of cereals in Costa Rica dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by X% compared with the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the average cereal yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. In 2022, shipments abroad of cereals increased by X% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports saw a prominent increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cereal exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Nicaragua (X tons) was the main destination for cereal exports from Costa Rica, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, cereal exports to Nicaragua exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Panama (X tons), fivefold. Guatemala (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Nicaragua amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Panama (X% per year) and Guatemala (X% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for cereal exported from Costa Rica were Nicaragua ($X), Panama ($X) and Guatemala ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further X%.
Among the main countries of destination, El Salvador, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cereal export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nicaragua ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
