Ether Market Size in Costa Rica

The Costa Rican ether market fell dramatically to $X in 2022, dropping by -35.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Costa Rica

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of ethers, when their volume decreased by -19.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 480%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ether exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 412% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Nicaragua (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and Panama (X tons) were the main destinations of ether exports from Costa Rica, together accounting for 82% of total exports. Honduras and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +58.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for ether exported from Costa Rica were Nicaragua ($X), Guatemala ($X) and Panama ($X), with a combined 77% share of total exports. Honduras and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +79.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average ether export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 67%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 246%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 158% against the previous year. In 2022, the United States (X tons) was the main ether supplier to Costa Rica, with a 91% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany (X tons), with a 1.9% share of total imports. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at -5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-0.1% per year) and China (+11.3% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ethers to Costa Rica, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States stood at -7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+2.4% per year) and Germany (+2.4% per year).

The average ether import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
