After three years of decline, the Costa Rican ghee market increased by 154% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption posted a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ghee exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee export price increased by +4.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.

Imports into Costa Rica
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of ghee, when their volume increased by 189% to X tons. In general, imports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 224% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ghee imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 210% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, New Zealand (X tons) was the main ghee supplier to Costa Rica, with a 95% share of total imports. It was followed by Uruguay (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from New Zealand amounted to +17.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (-18.4% per year) and Mexico (+1.1% per year).
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ghee to Costa Rica, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from New Zealand totaled +21.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+18.6% per year) and Uruguay (-20.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average ghee import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -16.4% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee import price increased by +4.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 41%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+17.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
