Exports by Country
Guatemala (X tons) was the main destination for lentil exports from Costa Rica, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, lentil exports to Guatemala exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, El Salvador (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (X kg), with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Guatemala totaled +18.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (+69.8% per year) and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (+17.2% per year).
In value terms, Guatemala ($X) remains the key foreign market for lentils exports from Costa Rica, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by El Salvador ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Guatemala stood at +21.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (+49.9% per year) and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (+1.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lentil export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+23.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lentil Imports
Imports into Costa Rica
In 2022, purchases abroad of lentils decreased by -3.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +42.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 58%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, lentil imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 108%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lentil to Costa Rica, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, lentil imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada amounted to +3.0%.
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lentils to Costa Rica, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 24% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada totaled +3.5%.
Import Prices by Country
The average lentil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -14.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the price for the United States totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+0.4%).
