In 2022, the Costa Rican mandarin and clementine market decreased by -25.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. Mandarin and clementine consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume decreased by 99.9% against the previous year. Mandarin and clementine production peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, the average yield of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas in Costa Rica was estimated at less than X kg per ha, stabilizing at 2021 figures. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. less than X ha of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas were harvested in Costa Rica; remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.

Exports from Costa Rica

In 2022, shipments abroad of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas increased by 45% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 2,987%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,476% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Finland (X tons) was the main destination for mandarin and clementine exports from Costa Rica, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, mandarin and clementine exports to Finland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), threefold. Nicaragua (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Finland totaled +174.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+60.6% per year) and Nicaragua (+1.1% per year).

In value terms, Finland ($X) remains the key foreign market for tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas exports from Costa Rica, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nicaragua ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Finland totaled +209.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nicaragua (+2.6% per year) and France (+57.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average mandarin and clementine export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mandarin And Clementine Imports

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, when their volume decreased by -21.2% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Peru (X tons) constituted the largest mandarin and clementine supplier to Costa Rica, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, mandarin and clementine imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Peru stood at +1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-0.6% per year) and Chile (+12.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest mandarin and clementine suppliers to Costa Rica were Peru ($X), Spain ($X) and Chile ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Chile, with a CAGR of +12.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average mandarin and clementine import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
