In 2022, the Costa Rican mushroom and truffle market decreased by -2.5% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep slump. Mushroom and truffle consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Costa Rica

In 2022, overseas shipments of mushrooms and truffles increased by 3.6% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports saw a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 216% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Nicaragua (X tons) was the main destination for mushroom and truffle exports from Costa Rica, with a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, mushroom and truffle exports to Nicaragua exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Panama (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nicaragua stood at +7.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Panama (-6.8% per year) and Germany (+21.1% per year).

In value terms, Nicaragua ($X) remains the key foreign market for mushrooms and truffles exports from Costa Rica, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Nicaragua stood at +10.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+10.2% per year) and Panama (-29.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average mushroom and truffle export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, overseas purchases of mushrooms and truffles were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Colombia (X tons) constituted the largest mushroom and truffle supplier to Costa Rica, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, mushroom and truffle imports from Colombia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Colombia amounted to -7.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (-3.9% per year) and Ecuador (-7.3% per year).

In value terms, Colombia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mushrooms and truffles to Costa Rica, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Colombia totaled -9.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (-6.5% per year) and Ecuador (-27.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average mushroom and truffle import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 6.8%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
