Olive Market Size in Costa Rica

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of olives, when their volume decreased by -5.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 464%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, olive imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 348% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of olive to Costa Rica, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, olive imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States totaled +47.3%.

In value terms, the largest olive suppliers to Costa Rica were the United States ($X) and Italy ($X).

The United States, with a CAGR of +51.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average olive import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, olive import price decreased by -16.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 65%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the United States stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+79.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
