Perfume Market Size in Costa Rica

The Costa Rican perfume market surged to $X in 2022, rising by 18% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption recorded a mild contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Perfume Exports

Exports from Costa Rica

In 2022, perfume exports from Costa Rica reduced dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -17% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 165%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, perfume exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 152%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nicaragua (X tons), El Salvador (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons) were the main destinations of perfume exports from Costa Rica, with a combined 83% share of total exports. Panama, Jamaica and Guyana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Jamaica (with a CAGR of +82.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for perfume exported from Costa Rica were Nicaragua ($X), El Salvador ($X) and Guatemala ($X), together accounting for 84% of total exports. Panama, Guyana and Jamaica lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Jamaica, with a CAGR of +117.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average perfume export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 44% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guyana ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Jamaica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+32.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, purchases abroad of perfumes and toilet waters decreased by -2.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, perfume imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a slight downturn. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of perfume imports to Costa Rica, together accounting for 41% of total imports. Mexico, the United States, France, Guatemala and Panama lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +95.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest perfume suppliers to Costa Rica were Spain ($X), Mexico ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 49% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +88.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average perfume import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (-1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
