Potato chips exports from Costa Rica declined to X tons in 2022, leveling off at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 813%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 584%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

El Salvador (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and Panama (X tons) were the main destinations of potato chips exports from Costa Rica, together comprising 87% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guatemala (with a CAGR of +121.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for potato chips exported from Costa Rica were El Salvador ($X), Guatemala ($X) and Panama ($X), together accounting for 90% of total exports.

The average potato chips export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 49%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Barbados (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Costa Rica

Potato chips imports into Costa Rica shrank markedly to X tons in 2022, waning by -19.4% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Honduras (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato chips imports to Costa Rica, together comprising 83% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Honduras ($X) and Guatemala ($X) appeared to be the largest potato chips suppliers to Costa Rica, with a combined 90% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Honduras, with a CAGR of +25.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
