Register Book Market Size in Costa Rica

In 2022, the Costa Rican register book market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption posted a notable increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Costa Rica

In 2022, approx. X tons of registers, account books, order books and receipt books were exported from Costa Rica; shrinking by -6.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, register book exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nicaragua (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons) and Panama (X tons) were the main destinations of register book exports from Costa Rica, together comprising 78% of total exports. Guatemala, Jamaica, the UK and El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Jamaica (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for register book exported from Costa Rica were the Dominican Republic ($X), Nicaragua ($X) and Panama ($X), together accounting for 72% of total exports.

Panama, with a CAGR of +3.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average register book export price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 7.2%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Jamaica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Dominican Republic (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Register Book Imports

Imports into Costa Rica

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of registers, account books, order books and receipt books increased by 66% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 136%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, register book imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -41.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 92%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of register book to Costa Rica, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, register book imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. El Salvador (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+57.8% per year) and El Salvador (+26.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of registers, account books, order books and receipt books to Costa Rica, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by El Salvador, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+58.6% per year) and El Salvador (+14.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average register book import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -24.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
