In 2022, shipments abroad of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

El Salvador (X tons) was the main destination for exports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use from Costa Rica, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use to El Salvador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Honduras (X tons), twofold. The Dominican Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Guatemala, with a CAGR of +52.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to El Salvador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nicaragua (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use into Costa Rica reduced to X tons in 2022, which is down by -7.1% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, imports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Guatemala (X tons) constituted the largest soap in bars other than for toilet use supplier to Costa Rica, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use from Guatemala exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Honduras (X tons), with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Guatemala totaled +5.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+24.5% per year) and Honduras (+3.6% per year).

In value terms, Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use to Costa Rica, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Guatemala totaled +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+21.4% per year) and the United States (+33.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
