Pasta And Couscous Production in Costa Rica

In value terms, pasta and couscous production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Pasta And Couscous Exports

Exports from Costa Rica

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous, when their volume decreased by -8.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 468%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pasta and couscous exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 365%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Panama (X tons) was the main destination for pasta and couscous exports from Costa Rica, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, pasta and couscous exports to Panama exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Chile (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Honduras (X tons), with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Panama stood at +92.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+19.2% per year) and Honduras (-3.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for pasta and couscous exported from Costa Rica were Panama ($X), Chile ($X) and Honduras ($X), together accounting for 85% of total exports.

Panama, with a CAGR of +75.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pasta and couscous export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pasta and couscous export price decreased by -19.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 35%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pasta And Couscous Imports

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, approx. X tons of stuffed pasta and couscous were imported into Costa Rica; jumping by 17% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 132%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pasta and couscous imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 88%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest pasta and couscous supplier to Costa Rica, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, pasta and couscous imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+59.1% per year) and Italy (-11.4% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of stuffed pasta and couscous to Costa Rica, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+52.4% per year) and Italy (-12.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pasta and couscous import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 39%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
