In value terms, preserved sweet corn exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Nicaragua (X tons) was the main destination for preserved sweet corn exports from Costa Rica, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved sweet corn exports to Nicaragua exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Honduras (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Nicaragua totaled -3.7%.

In value terms, Nicaragua ($X) remains the key foreign market for sweet corn prepared or preserved exports from Costa Rica, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Honduras ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Nicaragua amounted to -2.0%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average preserved sweet corn export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nicaragua amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nicaragua (+1.7%).

Imports into Costa Rica

In 2022, the amount of sweet corn prepared or preserved imported into Costa Rica rose slightly to X tons, growing by 4.1% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved sweet corn imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), China (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved sweet corn imports to Costa Rica, together comprising 99% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest preserved sweet corn suppliers to Costa Rica were the United States ($X), China ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 98% of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +6.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average preserved sweet corn import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 4.9%.
