From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Panama stood at -14.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (+8.7% per year) and Honduras (-12.0% per year).
In value terms, Panama ($X) remains the key foreign market for wheat gluten exports from Costa Rica, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by El Salvador ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Panama stood at -17.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (+19.3% per year) and Honduras (-14.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average wheat gluten export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 2.6%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to El Salvador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to El Salvador (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Costa Rica
In 2022, approx. X tons of wheat gluten were imported into Costa Rica; rising by 6.1% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 112%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wheat gluten imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 110%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Austria (X tons) constituted the largest wheat gluten supplier to Costa Rica, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, wheat gluten imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Austria totaled +17.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-11.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.5% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wheat gluten to Costa Rica, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Austria totaled +10.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-9.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average wheat gluten import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -11.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from China ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) and Lithuania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
