Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, activated carbon exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 245%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for activated carbon exports from Croatia, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, activated carbon exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, North Macedonia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X kg), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovenia amounted to +28.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (+27.7% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-5.2% per year).

In value terms, North Macedonia ($X) remains the key foreign market for activated carbon exports from Croatia, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovenia, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to North Macedonia totaled +33.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+12.5% per year) and Slovenia (+10.4% per year).

The average activated carbon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -13.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 72% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was North Macedonia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, activated carbon imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 138%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of activated carbon imports to Croatia, with a combined 93% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.2%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +44.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest activated carbon suppliers to Croatia were Austria ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 76% of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
