Apple Market Size in Croatia

The Croatian apple market reduced to $X in 2021, dropping by -14.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. Apple consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Apple Production in Croatia

In value terms, apple production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 252%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of apples in Croatia fell to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -6.8% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 262%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the average apple yield remained at a lower figure. Apple exports from Croatia soared to X tons in 2021, growing by 53% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 139%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 107%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for apple exports from Croatia, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, apple exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), twofold. Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria totaled +28.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+13.6% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+9.9% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X), Austria ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest markets for apple exported from Croatia worldwide, together accounting for 47% of total exports.

In 2021, the average apple export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, apple export price increased by +69.2% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 49%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas purchases of apples increased by 38% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports posted a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 125% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest apple supplier to Croatia, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, apple imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovenia (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland amounted to +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (-3.0% per year) and Italy (+1.7% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of apples to Croatia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovenia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland amounted to +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (-3.7% per year) and Italy (-0.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average apple import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -19.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
