Stationery Market Size in Croatia

In 2022, the Croatian stationery market increased by 14% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep slump. Stationery consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a abrupt curtailment. In 2022, shipments abroad of articles of stationery decreased by -0.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -7.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stationery exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +73.5% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 26%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Serbia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main destinations of stationery exports from Croatia, together accounting for 52% of total exports. Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Germany, Lebanon, Romania and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +48.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for stationery exported from Croatia were Austria ($X), Hungary ($X) and Serbia ($X), with a combined 46% share of total exports. Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Italy, Romania, North Macedonia and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

Lebanon, with a CAGR of +40.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average stationery export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of articles of stationery was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, stationery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Slovenia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of stationery imports to Croatia, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Italy, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +40.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Slovenia ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest stationery suppliers to Croatia, together accounting for 44% of total imports. China, Hungary, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 23%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
