Barley Market Size in Croatia

The Croatian barley market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decrease. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Barley Production in Croatia

In value terms, barley production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 42%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of barley in Croatia declined to X tons per ha, reducing by -5.7% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, barley exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 847%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Croatia, with a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X tons), threefold. Romania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +49.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+65.2% per year) and Romania (+14.3% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for barley exports from Croatia, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Serbia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy stood at +54.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+67.9% per year) and Romania (+18.5% per year).

The average barley export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Serbia ($X per ton) and Cyprus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) and Slovenia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cyprus (+43.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of barley, when their volume decreased by -41.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 165% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, barley imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Croatia, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Serbia (X tons), twofold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Hungary amounted to +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Serbia (+6.3% per year) and Austria (-1.2% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Serbia ($X) and Slovenia ($X) constituted the largest barley suppliers to Croatia, together accounting for 91% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +84.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average barley import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 33% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
