Bentonite Market Size in Croatia

For the fifth year in a row, the Croatian bentonite market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 19% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +73.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Croatia

In 2022, approx. X tons of bentonite were exported from Croatia; picking up by 22% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bentonite exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 47%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for bentonite exports from Croatia, accounting for a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, bentonite exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia totaled -1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+16.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-1.4% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for bentonite exports from Croatia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Serbia ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovenia stood at +14.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+18.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+19.8% per year).

In 2022, the average bentonite export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 163%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+21.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia

For the fifth consecutive year, Croatia recorded growth in overseas purchases of bentonite, which increased by 24% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 52%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bentonite imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +24.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of bentonite imports to Croatia, together comprising 66% of total imports. The Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Bulgaria and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +39.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bentonite suppliers to Croatia were the Netherlands ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Germany, Bulgaria and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +37.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average bentonite import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 69%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the price for Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+26.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
