Blueberry And Cranberry Market Size in Croatia

For the fifth consecutive year, the Croatian blueberry and cranberry market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.2% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption enjoyed a significant expansion. Blueberry and cranberry consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average blueberry and cranberry yield in Croatia contracted to X tons per ha, declining by -5.9% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 14%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of blueberries and cranberries were harvested in Croatia; shrinking by -2.6% on the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The blueberry and cranberry harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports from Croatia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of blueberries and cranberries decreased by -19.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 18,981%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 10,120%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of blueberry and cranberry exports from Croatia, with a combined 74% share of total exports. Germany, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Serbia (with a CAGR of +100.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X), Slovenia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest markets for blueberry and cranberry exported from Croatia worldwide, together accounting for 75% of total exports. The average blueberry and cranberry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 109%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, approx. X tons of blueberries and cranberries were imported into Croatia; picking up by 34% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 92% against the previous year.
