Serbia (X tons) was the main destination for carob exports from Croatia, accounting for a 65% share of total exports. Moreover, carob exports to Serbia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), threefold.

Imports into Croatia
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of carob decreased by -8.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 844%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carob imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 147% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Croatia, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, carob imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovenia (X kg), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hungary (X kg), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (-12.6% per year) and Hungary (+1.8% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Croatia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovenia, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands amounted to +8.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+15.4% per year) and Slovenia (+2.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carob import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 249% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+17.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
