The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for cheese exports from Croatia, accounting for a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Serbia (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia totaled +35.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+3.1% per year) and Serbia (+19.5% per year).
In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for cheese exports from Croatia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Serbia, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovenia stood at +30.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+3.4% per year) and Serbia (+15.5% per year).

In 2021, the average cheese export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Croatia
In 2021, imports of cheese into Croatia rose sharply to X tons, surging by 15% compared with the previous year. In general, imports saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 157%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, cheese imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest cheese supplier to Croatia, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovenia (X tons), with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +9.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+28.6% per year) and Slovenia (+21.2% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cheese to Croatia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+27.2% per year) and Italy (+15.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average cheese import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 177% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
