In 2021, overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 665% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, coffee extract exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 585% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Serbia (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main destinations of coffee extract exports from Croatia, with a combined 91% share of total exports. These countries were followed by North Macedonia, Hungary and Montenegro, which together accounted for a further 6.9%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +219.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Serbia ($X), Slovenia ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) were the largest markets for coffee extract exported from Croatia worldwide, together accounting for 92% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hungary, North Macedonia and Montenegro, which together accounted for a further 6%.
Hungary, with a CAGR of +229.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, coffee extract export price decreased by -21.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+74.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia
Coffee extract imports into Croatia rose markedly to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 13% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +26.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 62%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, coffee extract imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of coffee extract imports to Croatia, together comprising 47% of total imports. Hungary, the UK, Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands, France and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +41.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest coffee extract suppliers to Croatia were Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. The UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Hungary, Brazil, France and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +37.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average coffee extract import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
