Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.1% share.

In value terms, Slovenia ($X), China ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) constituted the largest markets for composite paperboard exported from Croatia worldwide, with a combined 87% share of total exports. Serbia lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 2.5%.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +50.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 42%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of composite paperboard to Croatia, with a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, composite paperboard imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Switzerland (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+11.8% per year) and Switzerland (+55.9% per year).

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of composite paper and paperboard to Croatia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Switzerland totaled +60.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+1.1% per year) and Italy (+13.1% per year).

In 2021, the average composite paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, composite paperboard import price increased by +21.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
