In 2022, the Croatian market for copper bars, rods and profiles decreased by -2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Copper bar, rod and profile consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 127%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, copper bar, rod and profile exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 93%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) was the main destination for copper bar, rod and profile exports from Croatia, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, copper bar, rod and profile exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Serbia (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to -5.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+134.2% per year) and Serbia (+26.1% per year).

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) remains the key foreign market for copper bars, rods and profiles exports from Croatia, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovenia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Serbia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to -2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+140.3% per year) and Serbia (+29.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for copper bars, rods and profiles stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -33.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper bar, rod and profile export price increased by +8.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 63%. In 2022, supplies from abroad of copper bars, rods and profiles decreased by -24.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 51%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, copper bar, rod and profile imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Slovenia (X tons) were the main suppliers of copper bar, rod and profile imports to Croatia, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Serbia, Germany, Turkey, Austria and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
