The Croatian plastic tableware and kitchenware market contracted to $X in 2022, falling by -10.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of plastic tableware and kitchenware was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,088% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 491%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic tableware and kitchenware exports from Croatia, together comprising 60% of total exports. Slovenia, the UK, Hungary, Portugal, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Italy and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +153.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and Slovenia ($X) constituted the largest markets for plastic tableware and kitchenware exported from Croatia worldwide, together comprising 52% of total exports. Poland, Hungary, the UK, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Lithuania and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +160.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average plastic tableware and kitchenware export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 87%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia

For the third year in a row, Croatia recorded decline in purchases abroad of plastic tableware and kitchenware, which decreased by -5.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +5.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 35%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Serbia (X tons) constituted the largest plastic tableware and kitchenware supplier to Croatia, with a 32% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports from Serbia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Serbia totaled +14.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+7.0% per year) and Italy (-10.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest plastic tableware and kitchenware suppliers to Croatia were Serbia ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 44% share of total imports. Slovenia, Hungary, Belgium, Poland, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, the Netherlands, Spain and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 47%.

Among the main suppliers, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +135.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average plastic tableware and kitchenware import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
