The Croatian ethanol market was estimated at $X in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a resilient expansion. Ethanol consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Ethanol exports from Croatia reduced dramatically to X litres in 2022, with a decrease of -24.9% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a significant curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 563%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ethanol exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 433% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Italy (X litres), Slovenia (X litres) and Austria (X litres) were the main destinations of ethanol exports from Croatia, together accounting for 90% of total exports. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of -9.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of ethyl alcohol decreased by -10.5% to X litres, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Hungary (X litres), Bulgaria (X litres) and Slovakia (X litres) were the main suppliers of ethanol imports to Croatia, with a combined 84% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Italy and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +117.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ethanol suppliers to Croatia were Hungary ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports. France, Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Italy and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

In 2022, the average ethanol import price amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per litre), while the price for Slovenia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+27.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
