In 2021, shipments abroad of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs decreased by -72.8% to X kg, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 289%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, meat and fish extracts exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 141%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Slovakia (X kg) was the main destination for meat and fish extracts exports from Croatia, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, meat and fish extracts exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hungary (X kg), with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovakia totaled +87.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+32.0% per year) and Hungary (-5.4% per year).
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs exports from Croatia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovakia amounted to +101.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+61.3% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-3.9% per year).

The average meat and fish extracts export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+23.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Extracts And Juices Of Meat, Fish, Crustaceans And Molluscs
Imports into Croatia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs increased by 7.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +21.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, meat and fish extracts imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of meat and fish extracts to Croatia, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, meat and fish extracts imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from France totaled +16.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+14.1% per year) and Italy (-10.2% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs to Croatia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from France totaled +17.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+12.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+41.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average meat and fish extracts import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, meat and fish extracts import price increased by +67.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
