The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of folding boxboard, when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. In general, exports saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 202%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, folding boxboard exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 177%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for folding boxboard exports from Croatia, with a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, folding boxboard exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovenia amounted to +19.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+148.7% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+9.8% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X), Germany ($X) and Russia ($X) were the largest markets for folding boxboard exported from Croatia worldwide, together comprising 46% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Russia, with a CAGR of +235.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 11%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Germany (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Slovenia (X tons) were the main suppliers of folding boxboard imports to Croatia, with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Austria, Finland, Poland, Hungary and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
