In 2022, the amount of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken exported from Croatia declined rapidly to X tons, reducing by -16.7% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for fresh chicken cut exports from Croatia, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh chicken cut exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, North Macedonia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Montenegro (X tons), with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia amounted to +20.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (+4.5% per year) and Montenegro (-0.5% per year).
In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for fresh or chilled cuts of chicken exports from Croatia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by North Macedonia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Montenegro, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovenia stood at +23.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: North Macedonia (+5.9% per year) and Montenegro (+1.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average fresh chicken cut export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Montenegro ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia
In 2022, approx. X tons of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken were imported into Croatia; with an increase of 25% compared with the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 156%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 186%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Hungary (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) and Slovenia (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh chicken cut imports to Croatia, with a combined 91% share of total imports. Poland, Italy and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.5%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +49.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), Hungary ($X) and Slovenia ($X) appeared to be the largest fresh chicken cut suppliers to Croatia, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Italy, Poland and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +55.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average fresh chicken cut import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
