Exports from Croatia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of grapefruits decreased by -19.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 19,469%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 18,347%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for grapefruit exports from Croatia, accounting for a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, grapefruit exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Slovenia amounted to +187.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+0.3% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+63.6% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for grapefruits exports from Croatia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovenia stood at +176.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-2.3% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+73.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average grapefruit export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of grapefruits, when their volume decreased by -32.5% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 53%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruit to Croatia, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, grapefruit imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey amounted to +6.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-1.4% per year) and Italy (+24.6% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest grapefruit suppliers to Croatia, together comprising 67% of total imports. Germany, Slovenia, South Africa, Hungary and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Hungary, with a CAGR of +33.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grapefruit import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
