Grape Market Size in Croatia

The Croatian grape market amounted to $X in 2022, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. Grape consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Grape Production in Croatia

In value terms, grape production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Grape production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of grapes in Croatia was estimated at X tons per ha, increasing by 2.6% on the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average grape yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of grapes production in Croatia amounted to X ha, leveling off at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 8.2% against the previous year. Grape exports from Croatia stood at X tons in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 879,658%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, grape exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 211,738%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Serbia (X tons) were the main destinations of grape exports from Croatia, together accounting for 77% of total exports. Spain, North Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Montenegro and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +87.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average grape export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia

In 2022, grape imports into Croatia dropped to X tons, with a decrease of -5.3% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, grape imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of grape to Croatia, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, grape imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovenia (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+7.1% per year) and Slovenia (+97.9% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of grapes to Croatia, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+10.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+10.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grape import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by North Macedonia (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
