In 2021, the Croatian laptop and tablet computer market increased by 6% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +76.4% against 2016 indices. Laptop and tablet computer consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Production of Laptops and Palm-Top Computers in Croatia

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer production fell markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of laptops and palm-top computers decreased by -21.2% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 145% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 227% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X units) was the main destination for laptop and tablet computer exports from Croatia, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, laptop and tablet computer exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X units), threefold. Slovenia (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to +11.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+10.6% per year) and Slovenia (+28.1% per year).

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), Serbia ($X) and Slovenia ($X) constituted the largest markets for laptop and tablet computer exported from Croatia worldwide, with a combined 72% share of total exports. Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +31.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average laptop and tablet computer export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, laptop and tablet computer export price decreased by -10.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of laptops and palm-top computers decreased by -17.2% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31%. Imports peaked at X units in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

China (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Austria (X units) were the main suppliers of laptop and tablet computer imports to Croatia, with a combined 67% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +53.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Austria ($X) appeared to be the largest laptop and tablet computer suppliers to Croatia, with a combined 63% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +65.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average laptop and tablet computer import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, laptop and tablet computer import price increased by +25.9% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+17.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
