In 2021, the Croatian malt market decreased by -2.2% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, production reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Croatia
In 2021, approx. X tons of malt (not roasted) were exported from Croatia; with an increase of 91% on 2020 figures. In general, exports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 93% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Brazil (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Croatia, accounting for a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, malt exports to Brazil exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), threefold. Kosovo (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Brazil was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+3.1% per year) and Kosovo (-10.2% per year).
In value terms, Brazil ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for malt (not roasted) exports from Croatia, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Brazil was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+7.5% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Montenegro ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Montenegro (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia
In 2021, purchases abroad of malt (not roasted) increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +59.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +36.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Austria (X tons) constituted the largest malt supplier to Croatia, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Austria stood at +12.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+2.6% per year) and Germany (+73.1% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt (not roasted) to Croatia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Austria amounted to +7.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (+2.7% per year) and Germany (+72.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 20%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
