Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, poppy seed exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 114% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of poppy seed exports from Croatia, with a combined 85% share of total exports. Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

In 2022, overseas purchases of poppy seed decreased by -12.6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, poppy seed imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of poppy seed imports to Croatia, with a combined 78% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +30.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest poppy seed suppliers to Croatia were the Czech Republic ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Austria ($X), together accounting for 81% of total imports.
